Auditions for Lady Windermere's Fan, a satirical comic gem by Oscar Wilde directed by Lowry Marshall will be:

In Stuart Theatre (Entrance off of the Main Green)

HOW TO PREPARE:

1. Please read the play. There is a copy available in the Becker (the library on the 3rd floor of Lyman Hall, the theatre building) or you can email the Stage Manager, Ria, for an electronic copy (ria.dilullo@gmail.com).

2. Show up! Sides (pieces from the play for you to audition with) will be provided at auditions. A time slot sign up sheet will be available in Stuart a half hour before the start of auditions.

New faces, old faces, we here at S&B are so very very glad to virtually see you here at the S&B blog. (We would, incidentally, also be happy to see you at our Facebook page, HERE).

We've got some exciting things cooking at S&B this month:

Auditions for our second slot show, Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan directed by Lowry Marshall, are next Friday, September 16th. Stay tuned for more information.
Speaking of our good friend Oscar, get ready to GET WILD(E) with us at our first slot show Gross Indecency directed by Kym Moore! It opens Thursday, September 29th and runs for two weekends. And, as always, First Years are FREE on Thursdays! (Also, ask about ushering).
And finally, as always, we here at S&B will be reading plays each week, already working on picking next year's season. Please come join us to talk about plays any Tuesday at noon in Lyman 005. AND suggest plays that you want us to read by clicking the "Suggest A Play" tab on this blog or by entering the title and playwright into the box on our listserv email. It's that time again...
Time for the newest additions to S&B's family...
And we want you!

Start thinking about applying to be a member of the S&B Board!

To get started, e-mail Alex Keegan (alexandra_keegan@brown.edu) and she'll connect you with a board buddy who can answer any questions you might have and who will walk you through the process and help you with your application.

After that you can:

1. Start thinking about/working on the application, which is posted below. It will be due at 5pm EST on Wednesday, April 20th.

2. Come join in on one of our weekly Open Meetings Tuesdays at noon in Lyman 005. If you want to read one of the plays we'll be discussing, check the sidebar on this blog a few days before the meeting to see what plays are on tap for the upcoming week :)

3. Come to our low-key New Members Schmooze (there will be pizza!) for prospective new members on Wednesday, April 13th at 6:00pm in Lyman 005.

And, of course, if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to speak with/email anyone on the board.

Talk = verbal animation, a rhetorical vibration exloring/exploding i) what and how artists know what they know ii) what audiences know about artists and what artists know iii) how any of us talks about the forces that form our minds and souls and iv) what we really just don't know and cant' say about each other...

"Greetings! Welcome to Talk auditions! All pretty simple. Nothing to prepare... Read the play, pick a character. Audition with just one side (familiarize yourself with it, but you don't have to memorize) - the character you read for will be taken as representative - you'll be put into consideration for various roles. Thanks!"

Sides, incidentally, are currently available in the Becker (the theatre department's library across the hall from Lyman 211).

Auditions are coming up next week--faster than Mojo Root Force. Make no mistake about it, this Fall 2010 S&B show is going to kick some @&&. Set in an uncertain future when rock stars rule the country and battle to the finish for fame and territory, this CRAZY rock ‘n roll play by American legend Sam Shepard will rock you, sock you, knock you out and leave you for DEAD. Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘n Roll by the baddest angel of them all.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Show up early for the best chance to cop an immortal shot. Come back on Friday if there’s time. No gratuitous nudity. Lotsa Rock ‘n Roll.

Nothing to prepare, but please try to read the play if you can. Copies in the Becker Library in Lyman Hall.

All parts, with the exception of Hoss (male) and Becky Lou (female), may be cast as either gender, but once cast, women will play women, men will play men! Only the pronouns will be changed as necessary. The Tooth of Crime will be cast without regard to ethnicity.

We’ll come back early to begin all day rehearsals on August 23rd. We have to get off the mark FAST on this one! A full week of 8-hour rehearsal days before classes start will get us to the September 23 Opening. We’ll close on October 3rd.

Managing Producer (Consultant)

Freedom Train Productions, a black queer theatre company, seeks a highly motivated and independent arts professional with a background in theatre management. This is a part time consultant position beginning in Spring 2010 with an option to stay on permanently dependent on funding.

The Managing Producer will:

* Develop a three-year development and relationship building strategy for special events fundraising and individual, institutional, and government giving;
* Work with the artistic team to identify and support the theatre's response to immediate public and private giving opportunities;
* Work with the artistic team to design a public theatre training series and related earned income revenue strategy; and
* Assess the artistic and management theatre model that the theatre has built over its first three years and provide consultation toward opportunities moving forward.

This position, funded through our Stonewall Community Foundation award, is a great opportunity for a rising arts leader to play a crucial role in the growth of an emerging theatre.

The Cook explores the personal, social and political cost of "Revolution." It is a social realist play that brings to mind Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun. We observe the relationship of Gladys and Carlos over forty years beginning on the eve of Castro's rise to power in 1959. The rise and fall of Castro's regime is reflected in the character's relationships, making it a truly human story.

What happens to the dream once the dreamer is awakened? She goes to "work" in an attempt to reconstruct that which has almost been destroyed: the human spirit.

Ivy Film Festival - Screenplay Readers Required!

The Ivy Film Festival is looking for Brown actors and actresses to read excerpts of winning student scripts at the 2010 Screenplay Brunch. The event will be held on the final day of the festival (Sunday, April 18th), and is the only opportunity that screenwriters have to showcase their work at the festival, so we're asking for your help in order to make the scripts sound as good as possible.

Volunteers will get free food at the brunch, as well as drink tickets at our after party, and tickets to one of our larger events (the schedule has not yet been finalized, but once it has been, the event is negotiable).

Gladys, the cook, early 30's. Works/lives in the mansion of Adria Santana, a member of the Cuban aristocracy before the Revolution. Gladys is passionate about her food, independent minded, provincial and loyal to a fault.

Carlos, Gladys' husband, early 30's. Works for the Santana household as a chauffeur. He is passionately committed to "the Revolution.” His machismo acts as a shield against profound feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability.

Adria/Lourdes, 30’s. As Adria, a wealthy Cuban aristocrat. Elegant, well traveled, and fearful of the impending social change that promises to transform her life forever. As Lourdes, Adria's Cuban-American daughter. Upper middle-class, educated, and suspicious. She is her mother's daughter and resents the losses incurred by her family during the Revolution.

Elena/Rosa, 20’s. As Elena, Gladys' cousin. Accommodating, kind, and willing to "serve.” As Rosa, the illegitimate child of Carlos and his mistress. Bold, independent, and smart. She's been raised by Gladys and is obviously close to her. She is studying engineering, but longs to be a cook like her step-mother.

Julio, 20, Gladys' cousin. Lean and "beautiful." He has his own sense of style, wit, rebelliousness and a touch of the poetic.

* With the exception of the actresses playing Adria/Lourdes and Elena/Rosa, all actors can expect to work on aging 40 years as the play progresses.

ABOUT THE PLAY: It’s New Years Eve1959 and Fidel Castro is coming to power in Havana. Gladys, a provincial but passionate cook, prepares Baked Alaska in the kitchen of a wealthy Cuban household for an array of guests. Suddenly, her mistress announces that she and her bourgeois husband must flee the country. Gladys promises to protect the house until they return. Over the course of the next four decades, Gladys keeps her promise…but also discovers the high cost of her loyalty.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Eduardo Machado was born in Cuba and came to the United States when he was nine. He is the author of over forty plays, including The Floating Island Plays, Once Removed, Stevie Wants To Play The Blues, A Burning Beach, Havana Is Waiting, and The Cook. They have been produced at many major regional theaters, as well as in Europe and Off-Broadway, including among others Seattle Repertory Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, The Actors Theater Of Louisville, The Mark Taper Forum, Hartford Stage, The Long Wharf Theater, The Williamstown Theater Festival, The Cherry Lane Theater, INTAR, America Place Theater and Hampstead Theatre in London. He is a member of the Actors Studio, The Ensemble Studio Theater, and an alumnus of New Dramatists. He has served on the boards of TCG, New Dramatists and Theatre for the New City. Talent search for a potential new scripted drama series for ABC Family

The series is based on the popular teen novel, “HUGE” by Sasha Paley, Teleplay by Winnie Holzman (My So Called Life). It explores Plus Size teens at a weight management camp, and brings a very positive message to television about learning to accept yourself – no matter what your size.

I was a theatre student myself, once nominated for an Irene Ryan, and I am aware of the fabulous talent available in colleges across the United States. The unfortunate problem for plus size talent is that they are not afforded as many opportunities to flourish as a working actor.

I am desperate to reach out to your community, your regional directors and department heads in college theatre across the country, to uncover hidden gems for the series regulars on our show. There are seven plus size lead roles as well as many recurring and guest star parts throughout the series.

We need PLUS SIZE GIRLS AND GUYS who are teenagers OR can play high school age (most 18-24 year olds are able to play High School on Television.)

Students interested can simply log on to the ABC Family link below to upload a personality video, or receive information on submitting a tape through the mail. All personality videos will be watched by Barbara Stordahl (my casting partner) and myself. Contenders will then be selected and sent scripted material (sides) to upload a reading for a particular character. The top choices for each role will test at the Network. Hi, my name is Bruce Gutierrez and I'm the president of the Student Volunteers for the Samaritans of Rhode Island (SVTSRI). Since 1977, the Samaritans of Rhode Island, a non-profit and non-religious organization, has worked in the community to raise awareness of suicide prevention and depression. The Samaritans offers a 24- hour listening line as well as a support group for those individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide. The 24-hour listening line is available for those who are depressed, suicidal, or simply have no one to talk to. Although an official university club did not previously exist, Brown students have been hotline volunteers for many years. However, by the end of Fall Semester 2008, the Student Volunteers for the Samaritans of Rhode Island officially became a Category I club and eventually achieved Category II status.

One of the main goals of SVSTRI is to increase campus awareness of suicide prevention and depression. The executive board has decided to organize a concert-like event in which various performance groups (a cappella, dance, cultural, etc.) will perform, as a way to raise awareness. As of right now, the tentative date for the event is March 12th and the exact location is to be determined (I am trying to reserve Salomon or Sayles). Seeking an ensemble of 5 (3W, 2M) to play the following roles:

Gladys, the cook, early 30's. Works/lives in the mansion of Adria Santana, a member of the Cuban aristocracy before the Revolution. Gladys is passionate about her food, independent minded, provincial and loyal to a fault.

Carlos, Gladys' husband, early 30's. Works for the Santana household as a chauffeur. He is passionately committed to "the Revolution.” His machismo acts as a shield against profound feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability.

Adria/Lourdes, 30’s. As Adria, a wealthy Cuban aristocrat. Elegant, well traveled, and fearful of the impending social change that promises to transform her life forever. As Lourdes, Adria's Cuban-American daughter. Upper middle-class, educated, and suspicious. She is her mother's daughter and resents the losses incurred by her family during the Revolution.

Elena/Rosa, 20’s. As Elena, Gladys' cousin. Accommodating, kind, and willing to "serve.” As Rosa, the illegitimate child of Carlos and his mistress. Bold, independent, and smart. She's been raised by Gladys and is obviously close to her. She is studying engineering, but longs to be a cook like her step-mother.

Julio, 20, Gladys' cousin. Lean and "beautiful." He has his own sense of style, wit, rebelliousness and a touch of the poetic.

* With the exception of the actresses playing Adria/Lourdes and Elena/Rosa, all actors can expect to work on aging 40 years as the play progresses.

ABOUT THE PLAY: It’s New Years Eve1959 and Fidel Castro is coming to power in Havana. Gladys, a provincial but passionate cook, prepares Baked Alaska in the kitchen of a wealthy Cuban household for an array of guests. Suddenly, her mistress announces that she and her bourgeois husband must flee the country. Gladys promises to protect the house until they return. Over the course of the next four decades, Gladys keeps her promise…but also discovers the high cost of her loyalty.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Eduardo Machado was born in Cuba and came to the United States when he was nine. He is the author of over forty plays, including The Floating Island Plays, Once Removed, Stevie Wants To Play The Blues, A Burning Beach, Havana Is Waiting, and The Cook. They have been produced at many major regional theaters, as well as in Europe and Off-Broadway, including among others Seattle Repertory Theatre, the Goodman Theatre, The Actors Theater Of Louisville, The Mark Taper Forum, Hartford Stage, The Long Wharf Theater, The Williamstown Theater Festival, The Cherry Lane Theater, INTAR, America Place Theater and Hampstead Theatre in London. He is a member of the Actors Studio, The Ensemble Studio Theater, and an alumnus of New Dramatists. He has served on the boards of TCG, New Dramatists and Theatre for the New City. His plays have been published by the Theatre Communications Group and Samuel French. Currently, Mr. Machado is the Artistic Director of INTAR Theatre in New York City. Seeking:

Hedwig - born a boy named Hansel in East Berlin, Hedwig is now an “internationally ignored” rock star. Seeking a charismatic performer with a strong, versatile, voice, comfort with various levels of drag, who can generally rock out and kick ass. This role is typically played by a male performer.

Yitzhak - a sullen male roadie and backup singer. We are seeking a versatile performer with the ability to back Hedwig up vocally. Must be comfortable and convincing in drag. Other than the singing, the role is basically silent -- strong and specific physical performance is a must. This role is typically played by a female performer.

To prepare:

2) Sixteen bars of a rock song which you can also perform as either a man or a woman. AGAIN, DO NOT BRING A SONG FROM THE SHOW. If you would like accompaniment, bring an instrumental cd (no vocals). Preferably, be prepared to sing a cappella with a microphone (provided.)

3) You may also be asked to read monologues from the script. Some approximation of an East-German accent is helpful but not mandatory.

About Hedwig:

The final show of Perishable's musical 2009-2010 season is the RI premiere of Hedwig and the Angry Inch by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask. Audiences everywhere are familiar with Hedwig, who fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a sex-change operation in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as planned – and now Hedwig is stopping in Providence, RI on a tour with her band, The Angry Inch, following her erstwhile lover Tommy Gnosis as he plays a local arena. This story of failed and redeemed love was made into a feature film by Killer Films.

About the production:

The production is directed by Megan Sandberg-Zakian and music directed by David Tessier. Rehearsals are approximately March 15-April 15, with performances running April 16-May 9, 2009.

In June 2008, members of Tectonic Theater Project returned to Laramie, Wyoming, to explore how the town had changed in the ten years since Matthew Shepard's murder. What they found defied their expectations. The result is a new play about how we construct our own history. This is the continuing story of an American Town.

On October 12, the 11th anniversary of Matthew Shepard's death, over 150 theatres across the country and around the world, including Brown University, will simultaneously present the world premiere reading of the epilogue. The presentation will include a live pre- and post-show from New York with the creators and Judy Shepard, hosted by Glenn Close.

Tub Time, or Think Tank

A durational instillation in the Production Workshop Upspace running February 9 through February 19. This work of sculpture and performance is a nostalgic exploration of loss and recovery, of intimacy and distance, of creation and destruction. Constantly in flux, the work is a process rather than a piece. Creators Timothy Simonds and Hollis Mickey bathe together in the PW Upspace amongst the refuse of Pleasure Dome. In this think tank anything can happen. The unexpected evolves in the intermingling and lingering of sensation, the mixing and blurring of boundaries. Audition for The Other Shore

Seeking

An ensemble of performers with an interest in and/or experience with body-centered styles of performance, including dance (particularly traditional South Asian movement and mudras, African dance, hip-hop and related forms and tap), singing, clowning and martial arts. Strong improvisational skills and the ability to play a musical instrument (especially percussion or wind instruments) is a plus. Additionally, a fluency in Chinese languages, Buddhist meditation practice and/or yoga is desired but certainly not required.

Please prepare a two-minute performance selection that best demonstrates your strengths as a performer. This might consist of (but is by no means limited to) a monologue, poem, song or dance combination. You will also be expected to read from the sides available, so please read the play in advance. Copies of the play are available in the Becker Library (on the second floor of Lyman Hall) and by emailing sockandbuskin@gmail.com.

If cast, you must return early from Spring Break for tech at 11 AM on Sunday, March 29. There will also be Saturday afternoon rehearsals on February 14, February 28 and March 7.

All plays cast under the supervision of the Department of Theatre, Speech & Dance at Brown University are cast without regard to race, color or ethnic identity except when such identity is central to the production's thematic content.

About the Production

Since the play was literally written to train actors in a new form of contemporary Chinese theatre particular to Gao Xingjian's dramaturgy, actors can expect to be involved in a fairly rigorous rehearsal process. Rehearsals will involve intensive work in the following performance techniques: tripartitioned acting (Xingjian's own theory), Viewpoints, sensory actualization, mudras and vocalization. Though some training in acting is a plus, it is certainly not required, as the ensemble will collaboratively develop an entirely unique performance style from the ground up.

About the Play

The Other Shore is a one-act play that explores the human struggle to reach enlightenment. The play’s title refers to the concept of paramita or nirvana, the land of enlightenment in Buddhism. According to Buddhist belief, humans experience an actual visible life full of suffering, but by living according to the virtues of paramita—morality, patience, meditation and wisdom—they can cross the river of life to the other shore and experience enlightenment. The unconventional staging and characterizations shadow the solitary struggle for meaning and internal illumination.

About the Playwright

Gao Xingjian is an internationally celebrated Chinese emigré novelist, dramatist, critic, and recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is also a noted translator, stage director and painter. Born January 4, 1940 in Ganzhou (Jiangxi province) in eastern China, Xingjian fled his native country for France in 1987 after years of artistic censorship and persecution. Although the general position by the Chinese media towards Gao is silence, a 2001 criticism of his novel Soul Mountain by the Yangcheng Evening News (a state-run newspaper) deemed him an "awful writer" and called his winning of the Nobel Prize "ludicrous." The Chinese government officially regards Gao as an exiled dissident, and all of his works are banned.

Audition for Pleasure Dome

Pleasure Dome

Auditions will be held on December 9 and 10 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm in the PW Downspace.

Pleasure Dome is a devised piece inspired by Alice in Wonderland, network television and Romantic poetry. Performers of all kinds sought for a mind-altering collaboration. Pertinent information: seeking seven or more disciplined dancers, singers, actors, musicians, sculptors, readers, and/or television-watchers interested in highly collaborative, speculative "play." The cast will need to return to Providence on January 15. Performance dates are February 6-9.

Special note from directors Andrew Starner and Dave Harrington:
If you are concerned about wanting to be in The Other Shore, please note that Pleasure Dome can use people who want to be in The Other Shore as well.

Here's how: you audition for us, we like you, we cast you. You come back on January 15 and work with us for a week. You audition for The Other Shore on January 26 and 27. If you are cast, you leave the Pleasure Dome as early as you feel comfortable. (Of course you will never leave the Pleasure Dome and your absence will be marked. We are planning on videotaping rehearsals.)

There is no way actors can perform in Pleasure Dome and start rehearsing for The Other Shore. However it is possible for an actor to be in both. That being said, we will know in advance who is considering auditioning for The Other Shore and we will have enough people to perform Pleasure Dome even if every person we cast provisionally gets cast by The Other Shore.

Sign-Ups

A sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board in the Leeds Breezeway of Lyman Hall. Please sign-up for one hour-long slot. If possible, sign-up for one of the evening times, as the afternoon slots on Thursday will be needed to accommodate those involved in other productions going up in December. If there is no availability during the time you have free, contact James (contact information below).

The Audition

Groups of twelve actors will audition together in hour-long slots. In pairs, they will read selected sides from the show (available, along with script, score, and recording, in the Becker Library in advance and at the auditions on the day-of). Individually, they will sing 16-32 bars of a song not from the show (but from a musical or the American Songbook) and should bring sheet music to the audition (accompanist provided, sheet music selections available in Orwig). Finally, the entire group will be taught a short selection of a dance from the show. Actors should wear clothes in which they can move.

Important Dates

Rehearsals will begin on January 15, one week before the start of classes. Actors are required to be on campus for this week, and housing will be arranged through ResLife. Actors will also be needed for tech and performances beginning on the Monday of Winter Weekend (February 16) straight through the show’s closing (March 8).

Interview with Spencer Golub

Spencer Golub is the director of S&B's current production, The Changeling.

1) Tell me a little about the play. What drew you to it?

The play is about sex, murder, mayhem, madness. It’s a familiar Jacobean tragedy, between “dark comedy” and tragedy. It’s like a late-night horror version of Shakespeare; people are dying on account of love, passion drives them to extremes no one could foresee.

There’s no moral or philosophical stance I’m trying to foist on spectators. It’s an adventure in excess, which is what I like about Jacobean drama. There are a handful of texts in world literature where a woman and a man are locked in a struggle to the death through passion and this one stuck with me. I wanted to build a world around that that would sustain that relationship.

It’s midnight madness theatre where spectators are shocked, startled, and emptied of the darkness they brought in with them.

2) This is a classic Jacobean play, “one of the best” according to one source. What do you think of that designation? What kind of responsibility do you feel toward the text?

“Classic Jacobean text” is an oxymoron really. They are classic in terms of what they do, not necessarily the beauty of the writing. My responsibility is to help the play speak to an audience, not in the play’s time, but in my time. I see my responsibility is to immerse myself not so much in the period of the writing but the feeling, the theatrical psyche. I need to make it as theatrical as possible. The theatrical event should have a visceral effect—make the blood pump faster in both the heart and the head.

3) Any other influences on your approach to directing the play?

Some influences I can’t tell—but you’ll see them. Anything I direct is influenced by film and music. It’s an amalgam, the influences are absorbed, so it’s hard to say where they begin and end. It should be recognizable as Spencer Golub, not as its influences. Just like the most important part of writing is rewriting, directing’s most important part is redirecting. It’s about determining what’s worth keeping in collaboration with the actors. Talking about influences may be a bit of a feint. You allude to them to create a tension that undoes them. I’m looking for things to react to or against rather than ascribe to or reinforce.

4) Why The Changeling now?

For me the question is actually, why at all? Relevance is never a question I ask. It’s not “because of society or the turn of historic events.” The play speaks to something inside of me… or that may just be self-delusion. It’s a play I wanted to stage because of that relationship as opposed to a particular protagonist. It’s going to be a dark ride.
