Arts, Culture, and the Soul of a City
Donald King ’93, Founder and Artistic/Executive Director, Providence Black Repertory Company
Location: Rites and Reason Theatre, 155 Angell Street
Founded in 1996 by Artistic/Executive Director Donald W. King ‘93, Providence Black Repertory Company produced its first production on the third floor of an old print shop in Downcity Providence. As a native Rhode Islander, King was acutely aware of the need and responsibility to build a vital cultural institution dedicated to making an artistic, social, and political impact. Along the way, the theatre also birthed Sound Session, a major annual summer music festival organized in partnership with the city. Thirteen years later, the region and theatre face serious economic challenges. How can an innovative theatre reinvent itself, survive, and thrive in these difficult times?
Don King is the recipient of the 2009 John Hope Alumni Award for Public Service, presented by the Brown Alumni Association and Howard R. Swearer Center for Public Service. This forum is co-sponsored by the Swearer Center, the Department of Africana Studies and the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America.

Monitoring Moliere: Surveillance, Comedy, and Tartuffe
Elise Morrison is a PhD candidate at Brown in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies. Her dissertation, “Through the Looking Glass: Feminist Strategies in Surveillance Art,” looks at artists whose work strategically employs technologies and techniques of surveillance to create performances and installations that pose new and different ways of interacting with and understanding apparatuses of surveillance. She has also performed several of her own surveillance art pieces on the public thoroughfares of New York, Providence and the INTERNET.

Assistant Stage Managers wanted!
The production of Tartuffe is currently looking for one or two ASMs.
Tartuffe will run from September 24th-27th, and October 1st-4th. This is a show with great opportunities for technical work (sound, video) and the role of ASM will be an excellent way of getting involved in the production process.

Auditions will be held in small groups. NO PREPARATION NECESSARY! We will teach you everything you need to know, right from the show! If you want to prepare a song, you’re encouraged to do so. Please bring your music! Scripts and music from the show will be available in the Becker Library before classes begin.

A note for a cappella members: Friday and Saturday are big days for a cappella groups, so plan accordingly. If you want to audition and attend a callback, please inform your group now that you may need to leave for a period of time in the blocks above! We will work with you to schedule a convenient time.
